Hydrogen as a storage medium

A recent development in energy technology is the use of hydrogen as an energy storage medium, particularly for storing energy from photovoltaic systems. Hydrogen energy storage systems are now available for both private household use and larger commercial systems.

What advantages does hydrogen storage offer compared to conventional (lithium) battery storage?

Unlike conventional battery storage, conventional batteries are best suited for short-term storage. They can store energy quickly and release it efficiently when needed. However, they are less suitable for long-term storage because the required capacity would be very expensive and conventional lithium batteries lose charge over time.

Hydrogen, on the other hand, is ideally suited for long-term storage. Excess energy produced during the summer months can be stored and used in the winter, when photovoltaic systems produce less energy. When a battery reaches its maximum capacity, the excess electricity can be used to generate hydrogen. When needed, the hydrogen can then be converted back into electricity and fed into the power grid.
